Saturday 5/16/09 we had the Seminar on Black Flag Wing Chun.  This was the first opportunity I have had to attend a Wing Chun Seminar. We had a lot of fun talking about history, philosophy and concept.  It was very interesting to see how everything ties together.  I found out that there are actually more than just the Red Flag and the Black Flag versions of Wing Chun.  Also there was a separate reason for each one.  Each one served a different purpose.

After that we gathered together and watched and listened as Master Lin talked about the applications and then the hands on of the workshop started. I have been studying martial arts for a while now.  I have talked with and seen many teachers show their skill.  I have touched hands with most of them.  I have been hit really hard by some of them.  I have seen many videos and watched a lot of the YouTube videos ---- but, as far as for Master Lin I have never in my entire life seen that kind of power.  I have heard people talk about it, but I have never found anyone who could actually do it!  I was completely blown away.  The power I am speaking of is what we call Faat Jing power.  Generated from a "Whipping" action, similar to the way that the internal art forms generate their force.  This means that there is a big influence from the internal side as well as the external side of the martial arts.  As we were practicing the two man drills, I had the opportunity to touch hands with Master Lin and WOW!!!  He has got some awesome Faat Jing power!!  The most amazing thing to me was that he could generate this kind of force while still talking and carrying on a conversation with us!  He could do this while still breathing normally.  Another thing that blew me away was that you could hear his hands move through the air with a loud “whoosh” from about 15 feet away.  The thing is he can do this from any position with short or no distance several times in a row without getting tired.  Even sitting down!

When I saw Master Lin move his body and show some of his abilities.  At once I realized that everything that I have ever studied or ever heard about in all my studies was in the movements he was doing.  I have never seen that before.  Someone who can do this, teach this, explain it well, and still be very humble is a special person in my opinion. This was a very good Seminar and I want to come back for another one.

I would like to say that I had the honor, and great privilege of being able to spend some time with Master Lin outside of the Seminar.  Master Meng, Master Lin and I spent some time talking about many things ranging from Taoism, to Buddhism, to Internal and External Martial arts, to Faat Jing (Huat Geng) Power.  I will say that Master Lin is very humble and I was impressed with him as a person.

Sunday 5/17/09, we had the Seminar on Taoism presented by Master Lin.  I have done a lot of personal searching, and one of the areas was in Taoism.  Throughout my searching I have found out that I am interested in Kung Fu (Internal and External), Feng Shui, etc...  Basically everything that we talked about are things I want to study.  What I have learned from Master Lin is that the people I was talking with about learning Taoism were teaching Religious Taoism.  Whereas I was looking for a study of Spiritual Taoism.  I would like to thank Master Lin for showing me the difference.

We discused everything in great detail, and we all had a great time.  I was very impressed with Master Lin's level of knowledge about Taoism.  I have seen a lot of things on the internet.  I have talked with 2 Taoist priests.  One who lives in Denver Colorado inside a Taoist Temple and the other lives in California.  I have also read some Taoist philosophy books.  I have never heard anyone explain Taoism in this much detail, or this well.  I would also like to point out that I was never told that there was diferent kinds of Taoism.

Master Lin went over Philosophy Taoism, Religious Taoism, and Spiritual Taoism and the differences between them.  He explained the differences between Disciples and Adherents as it applies to every religion.  He explained that the study of Taoism includes the study of Wudang Tai Chi, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Feng Shui, Meditation, Qi Gong, and Taoist Divination.  We talked about how religion has evolved in civilization throughout history ranging from the Primitive Stage and going all the way to the Consciousness Stage.

Basically the way I see it, if you did not have Master Lin's teachings, you would not be able to tell the difference between Philosophy, Religious, and Spiritual taoism.

On behalf of the Ving Tsun Museum, I want to express my gratitude to Master Lin for presenting an historical workshop. This was the first public workshop on the Black Flag Wing Chun lineage in the United States. We had a good turn-out with participants from Dayton, OH; Centerville, OH; Cincinnati, OH; Detroit, Michigan; Kansas City, MO; and Richmond, IN.

As everyone knows, the VTM is one of the leading institutes on the history and evolution of Wing Chun. What Master Lin shared on his lineage has helped to further strengthened the connection that Wing Chun has Shaolin roots, is heavily influenced by Chan Buddhism, supporting the story of the destruction of the Southern Shaolin and the forming of the secret societies.

The first part of the workshop covered the history of the lineage from the destruction of the Southern Shaolin temple to the modern era. Second, he covered the concepts and philosophy, squaring positioning Wing Chun as a Chan martial art. With the details he provided, the connection to Buddhist roots are clear. From there, it was all hands-on application of the technology from the Black Flag Wing Chun lineage.

What impressed the participants the most was not just the historical connections, or the discussion of the system’s philosophy, but to have the skill expressed by an expert. Most of us that study Southern Shaolin systems - such as Wing Chun, Hung Ga, Southern Preying Mantis, Choi Lei Fut, White Crane, or Baak Mei - all share the concept of having the ability to generate force in a short distance. This skill was one of the many highlights of the workshop, where participants could actually see, hear, and feel the power.

After many hours of interaction, participants also walked away with the same conclusions: Suhu Lin is very knowledgeable, very skillful, and yet very humble. With the excitement of the workshop, we went over-schedule and finished the evening with a nice Korean BBQ dinner.

If the first day represented the White Tiger, the second day represented the Green Dragon.

It's one thing to read and study Taoism on your own, or even take a class on it - and I have done both. My major in college was Philosophy. It's a different world to have it explained and discussed from someone that lives Taoism as a path to life. Six hours went very fast - we even decided to skip lunch to cover all the material.

Overall the weekend was a great success. Master Lin was very impressed with the professionalism of the VTM. All participants were already expressing interest in a follow-up workshop, asking for a date for the next workshop.

Sincerely, Master Benny Meng

First and foremost, I want to say thank you to Master Benny Meng and also his family VTM and Meng's Martial Art Family, to make it possible for HKB Eng Chun Pai is being presented to the public workshop for the first time.

Overall, I am very happy, grateful and impressed with the outcome of the seminar because
1.   Everyone passions, mindset, enthusiasms and appreciation in Black Flag Wing Chun Kungfu.
2.   The professionalism of the VTM.
3.   Hospitality from Master Meng, his family, his organizations and his disciples.

Although the workshop was scheduled for six hours, supposedly ending at 4pm, with the enthusiasms of the attendees, we kept going three hours over until 7pm. The clock went too fast on that day.

At the end of the workshop, everyone was asking for a date for the next workshop, For that I also want to thank you all for interest in the follow-up workshop that all participants were already expressing. I enjoyed our time together as we went over the history, Chan Philosophy and concept/formula as well as working out with all of you. And I am also looking forward to meet all of you again.

I hope with the ‘little bit of knowledge and information’ (Because of time limitation) that I shared; it can bring some benefits to the participants and become fruitful.

Note:
1. I will post some of the feedbacks from the participant in this thread.
2. There is a new gallery page uploaded for for this seminar. Here is the quick link; http://www.shaolinkungfucenter.com/gallery/2009dayton.html

"Sifu Lin seemed to be good at relating information to others in a way that is understandable and digestable and was an inspiration to me as I train to be a teacher. It was clear that he is a kindred spirit to our school and the goals of its members. Thank you for visiting us Sifu Lin !"

"I have a great amount of love for Shaolin Kungfu especially Wing Chun, I feel a lot of loose ends are tied up with the history. The system of Black Flag teaching is very effective, I can tell it is very comprehensive and multi-layered, with practical approach to self-defense. It is a great thing that Sifu Lin has come over to teach Black Flag Wing Chun. A great treasure chest has been opened. Knowing that, we as Wing Chun practicioners must take advantage of the resources of experience and knowledge, to preserve this very pure concept."

"Sifu Lin was very informative in a way that can be understood clearly. Also altough different it is also the same in a lot of things. My training at Meng's helped me to understand the different positions as well as the18 lohan hands.
It was a constant training. No time wasted in his seminar. The way he group us into 5(five) sub-groups to look closely at our personal training as far as errors.

Sifu Lin is a very positive person. I never felt like I was not grasping what he was teaching because he made me feel lile I was a 'pro' just because I kept trying the different thing and ultimately I was able to really understand the concept behind his teachings.

I look forward to learning more from Sifu Lin. I was relaxed but focused. He is a great teacher !! Thanks so much for sharing your ?Septeor? with us, even though it was only a small piece of your pie!

I will not forget what you showed us, instead I will train what you taught until it becomes natural to me.
Thanks !"
