Sifu Mike Mathews (Huber Heights, OH)

Mr. Mike Mathews is currently a third degree Black Sash in the Ving Tsun Museum grading curriculum under the guidance of his Sifu, Master Benny Meng. Sifu Mathews performed his Baai Si under Master Meng on June 28, 1997. He was in the first group of students to complete the Ip Man system of Wing Chun in 2000 along with 4 other classmates: Richard Loewenhagen, Rick Howard, Jeremy Roadruck, and Dan Wells. Moy Yat International recognized him as a First Degree Instructor in 2000. Sifu Mathews is also recognized as a 7th level Senior Instructor of Ip Man Wing Chun certified by the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Hong Kong, having participated in the VTAA Senior Instructor Certification Program hosted at the VTM in October 1998. He was accepted as a 10th Generation Disciple in the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kung Fu system on January 18, 2001 under Sifu Meng, granted by Grand Master Gee.

Sifu Mathews began his martial arts journey in 1993 with Meng’s Martial Arts around the same time he entered college at Wright-State University. He came to the school with a brief background in Karate. A long-time fan of TV’s Kung Fu Theater, Sifu Mathews found training in martial arts to be a childhood dream come true. A fitness aficionado, Sifu Mathews maintains a consistent workout schedule that includes running, weights, and cycling.

Sifu Mathews has experience in all elements of martial arts including participation in demonstrations at the Wushu Nationals and a successful competitive history in Forms, Chi Sau, and Sparring. He has been a champion on the local, regional, and national levels. He was a United States Wushu-Kungfu Federation National Champion for three times – ‘98, ‘99, ’01 and the Wing Chun Grand Champion for the Arnold Battle of Columbus in 2001. Sifu Mathews feels these experiences have been invaluable to improving his personal knowledge and skill as the opportunities for free exchange with other martial artists has only helped to solidify his training.

Academically, Sifu Mathews has achieved a Bachelor of Science Degree in Operations Management and is currently employed in the automotive industry as a materials management specialist. His knowledge of efficiency and systems thinking makes him an invaluable member of the team, able to facilitate the application of lean manufacturing principles.
